Tinubu Rest Tenure Extension Controversy,Sacks IGP Usman Akali Baba, Appoints Olukayode Egbetokun In Acting Capacity

Despite the controversial four years extension of his tenure, few weeks to his statutory retirement, by former president Muhammad Buhari, President Bola Tinubu on Monday sacked Former Inspector General Of Police, Usman Akali Baba, along side other service Chief.

It would be recalled that Babas’ tenure extension, generated much controversies even to the Judiciary, as a Federal High Court in Awka , Anambra State in its first ruling declared IGP Baba continued stay in office illegal.

Though the same court recently purged itself of the Judgement citing none service of court processes on Baba, fraud, misinformation amongst others as reason.

The controversy Did not die until yesterday when Tinubu appointed his former Chief Security Officer, DIG Egbetokun Olukayode as the acting Inspector General of Police.

This is coming barely three months after the Police Service Commission approved the appointment of Egbetokun as a Deputy-Inspector General of Police who will be representing the South-West geopolitical zone of the country.

DIG Egbetokun replaced DIG Johnson  Kokumo who retired from the Service on March 15 this year.

His appointment as the acting IG was made known in a statement by the Director, Information, Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation, Willie Bassey.

Here are the eight things you may want to know about the newly appointed acting IGP

Egbetokun was the former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.

In 1999, he was appointed Chief Security Officer to President Tinubu when he was Lagos State governor.

He served as the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos, Squadron Commander, Mopol 5, Benin, Benin City, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Fraud Unit, FCT Command, Abuja; Chief Superintendent of Police, Administration, Lagos State Command Head Quarters, Ikeja; Area Commander, Osogbo, Osun State Command; and Area Commander, Gusau, Zamfara State Command, among others.

Egbetokun graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in June 1987; and lectured Mathematics briefly at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, before his enlistment into the Police Force.

He also holds MSc in Engineering Analysis from UNILAG, Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University, Abraka, and MBA from Lagos State University, Ojo.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1964 in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Egbetokun enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
