Peter Obi contested for the governorship election in Anambra State in 2003,as the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) party candidate but lost to the PDP party candidate Chris Ngige.
He repelled against the independent National Electoral Commission judgment in court for almost three years and won,he was inaugurated as the governor of Anambra State on the 17th of March,2006 but was impeached by the State house of Assembly after seven months in Office and was replaced by his Deputy Virginia Etiba who was the first female governor in Nigeria history.
He was later returned as the governor of Lagos State by the Court of Appeal on the 9th of February 2007.
In 2010,he once again contested for the governorship election in Anambra State against his opponent Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo,a candidate of the people’s Democratic party(PDP) and won,he governed for four years in Anambra State and got re-elected in 2014 to run for a second tenure.
In 2019,he contested for the office of the Vice president of Nigeria alongside Atiku Abubakar who was contesting for the office of the president as the people’s Democratic party (PDP) candidate,but lost to Muhammadu Buhari of the All progressive Congress (who was the former president of Nigeria).
In 2022,he contested as the Labour Party candidate for the office of the president alongside his vice presidential candidate Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.
Peter obi’s background and status as a major candidate not associated with any of the two Nigeria principal parties drew correlation with the French president Emmanuel Macron successful presidential candidacy.
Peter Obi conveyed his admiration and respect for the French president Emmanuel Macron and was among those who received and welcomed him during his visit to Lagos.
